In 2023, VolunteeringACT coordinated the biggest surveys of volunteers and volunteer managers ever conducted in the ACT. Together, the two surveys received 580 responses from both volunteers and volunteer managers, providing us with a vital snapshot of the current state of volunteering in the ACT. The results showed that 279,000 ACT residents contributed over 63 million hours of their time to volunteering in 2023, generating $14.1 billion of value for the Canberra Region.

More about the project
The State of Volunteering Report is a research project conducted by an independent organisation in partnership with state and territory volunteering peak bodies and aims to provide a current snapshot of the volunteering sector across Australia.
The research also captures and quantifies the changing nature of volunteering in the population and in volunteer-involving organisations.
The methodology used in this project was first undertaken in Tasmania in 2014, in Western Australia in 2015 and again in Tasmania in 2019. Volunteering is defined in these reports as ‘Time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain.’ This definition was developed by Volunteering Australia in 2015 and adopted by all state and territory volunteering peak bodies.
Snapshot of Volunteering in Australia
The Snapshot of Volunteering in Australia Report was collaboratively commissioned by all State and Territory Volunteering Peak Bodies to provide a detailed overview of volunteering in Australia.
The report is based on the surveys conducted around Australia in 2023 for each State and Territory’s State of Volunteering Report. The current Snapshot Report is a result of the efforts and collaboration of each of the State and Territory peak bodies in facilitating these surveys in their own jurisdictions, and in providing advice on the development and publication of the report.
The report outlines the current state of volunteering in Australia and considers the economic and social value of volunteering, while capturing the unique characteristics of the nation’s volunteer landscape and providing a deeper understanding of its importance.
