2024 Volunteering Awards, Canberra Region – Nomination form

Welcome!

Any individuals or teams who have volunteered in the Canberra Region can be nominated, including people who have been nominated in previous years.

There are nine award categories and nominations are accepted for seven of those categories only. All nominations received will automatically be eligible for the Volunteer of the Year and Canberra’s Choice Awards.

All nominee/s must be volunteers or volunteer teams, not paid employees or paid volunteer managers.

WELCOME

The Volunteering Awards, Canberra Region are the premier recognition event for volunteers in the region. This event makes stories of spirit, kindness, innovation, inclusion, and resilience visible to our whole community. They are held in recognition of the International Volunteer Day, celebrated on 5 December annually. VolunteeringACT acknowledges volunteering is time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain. VolunteeringACT invites you to nominate your friends, family and colleagues for the 2024 Volunteering Awards, Canberra Region.

AWARD CATEGORIES

There are nine award categories and nominations are accepted for seven of those categories only. All nominations received will automatically qualify for the Volunteer of the Year and Canberra's Choice Awards. All nominee/s must be volunteers or volunteer teams, not paid employees or paid volunteer managers. Nominations will close on Thursday, 24 October, at 12pm.

Award category description: Volunteer Team of the Year Award

This award recognises a team, program, or organisation that has made a significant positive impact in the Canberra community through their volunteer work. For example, a team that has demonstrated its ability to operate as a cohesive team to successfully achieve its goal. Another example could be a team that has overcome difficulties and barriers to its work and still delivered outstanding outcomes to the community.

Award category description: Volunteer Leadership Award

This award recognises an individual volunteer or a volunteer team that demonstrated commitment to the principles of kindness, collaboration, and teamwork in their work and has had a significant community impact through their leadership. For example, an individual or team who made a significant contribution by demonstrating leadership or mentoring qualities without necessarily holding the title of being a leader. If you are looking to nominate a volunteer coordinator or manager (paid or unpaid), please nominate them for the 2024 Volunteer Manager of the Year Award – details are available on our website.

Award category description: Inclusion Award

This award recognises an individual or team whose volunteering work has had a beneficial social impact by helping to reduce and remove barriers to participation in the Canberra community. This volunteer or team have demonstrated active commitment to inclusive practices and behaviours in their community beyond just recognising the need for inclusion. For example, a volunteer or team who has advocated for the implementation of inclusive practices in Canberra through a range of methods. Recognising diversity is only the first step towards an inclusive Canberra. Inclusion is the action towards respecting, listening to and including the diverse range of peoples that exist throughout Canberra.

Award category description: First Nations Volunteer of the Year

This award recognises an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individual or team whose volunteering contributions have had a significant positive community impact. For example, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander volunteer or team who has led the way for positive change in the Canberra community or has shown commitment to the cause they volunteer for. At least half of the team members must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander to be considered eligible for this award.

Award category description: Senior Volunteer of the Year

This award recognises an individual or team (aged 55+) whose volunteering contributions have made a significant positive impact in the Canberra community.  For example, a senior volunteer or team who has demonstrated commitment through long volunteering service record or dedicating a large amount of their time volunteering within or across multiple organisations. An individual nominee must be within the age bracket to be eligible for this award. For team nominations, ensure half of the team members are in this age bracket to be considered eligible for this award.

Award category description: Young Volunteer of the Year

This award recognises an individual or team (under 30) whose volunteering contributions have made a significant positive impact in the Canberra community. For example, a young person or team who has demonstrated commitment to the cause and applied a significant amount of energy, thought and skill to their volunteering work. An individual nominee must be within the age bracket to be eligible for this award. For team nominations, ensure half of the team members are in this age bracket to be considered eligible for this award.

Award category description: Community Support Award

This award recognises an individual or team whose volunteering contributions have been instrumental in supporting people and communities through personal or community crisis situations. These situations could include cost of living crisis, food relief, natural disaster or personal crisis. This individual or the volunteer team has demonstrated resilience, problem solving skills and dedication for the cause. Some examples for this award include someone who has aided people or the community during a need for food relief or during a fire or flood; or a volunteer or team who have provided online or phone assistance to those experiencing crisis such as domestic abuse or mental health challenges; or a volunteer or team who has provided support through organising, collating or administrative assistance, like distributing hygiene parcels, arranging emergency housing or collection of donated food. This award applies to volunteers in any sector, including food, housing, emergency and crisis, wellbeing and mental health support.

This award winner is chosen based on the number of votes received by the public. Voting will commence online once nominations for the awards have closed.
